Clifford Lee Cook, The Gay Mayor of Central Oregon, passed away on September 21 at his home.

A long time resident of Bend, he was 77 years old. He was a man who always had a positive attitude. He was born in Salem, OR on March 3, 1940 to Vye (Rickard) and Vance Cook. He taught in the Salem School District for 30 years at both South Salem High and Sprague High School. Cliff retired in 1993 to live in Central Oregon. He worked at Sunriver and Red Lion for a number of years in hotel administration. He worked hard and long for equal rights in the LGBT community, serving on the board in both PFLAG and the Human Dignity Coalition.

He founded Stars and Rainbows to provide social events for the LGBT community and their friends and families. He felt very strongly that hate, prejudice and discrimination had no place in this world. He was a much loved brother, nicknamed Butch, to Christy Sanders, Sally Eeds and Richard Schultz. He was Uncle Butch to Kristina Ferrero, Rick Schultz and Tracey Lorts. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, Vye and Vance, step-father, Oscar Schultz and god parents, Ray and Maude Ruggles. A service was held at 4:30 on September 30 at Nativity in Bend Lutheran Church, 60850 Brosterhous Rd.
