Patti Kinney / 51st CLASS REUNION NEWS
« on: August 19, 2021, 01:50:01 PM »
I thought the Old Schoolmates might be interested in this. Our 51st reunion was the same weekend as the picnic (Picnic in the Park II) and I know we had quite a few people stop by the picnic as well as coming to our events. We are very excited about this piece of news of what we were able to accomplish! This is from an email we sent out to those on our list serve… around 150 classmates. The chairs it mentions were from the old high school auditorium… A couple of our classmates had bid on storage lockers, and found a treasure trove of them! They have restored them… My husband and I even have a set on our front porch.

Wow! We are so excited to let you know that our class, our very generous class, raised over $4,000 to donate to the Cottage Grove Community Foundation to provide scholarships for graduating CGHS 2022 students - and we still have a few donations coming in! The money was raised through ticket sales for the raffle, the auction of the auditorium chairs, and donation given for the cause.

The story behind the auction was great - classmates were bidding against one another and the winner donated it back for another round of bids - this kept happening until we'd raised $900 on the chairs.  Ken Batchelder was the final winner and took them home with him - he was delighted to get them as he not only graduated from the old high school building, but his father and his children did as well - so they are living in a home with lots of CGHS history.

« on: July 18, 2021, 09:52:11 AM »
Ruth Ann Porisch, age 80, passed away peacefully November 15, 2020.

Ruth was born in Bimidji, MN as the oldest child of John and Ann Porisch. The family moved to Gold Beach, OR and Ruth graduated high school from Cottage Grove.

She received a scholarship to attend Valparaiso University, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in social work.

After college, Ruth became a social worker in Chicago, IL, where she lived in Cabrini-Green public housing and fought for civil rights—including marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

She moved back to Minnesota to earn her Masters degree at the University of Minnesota. In 1973, she took a job at Bethany College and moved to Lindsborg, KS. While developing the school’s social work program, she met her husband, Art, at the local car dealership.

Ruth became stepmother to Art’s son, John. The two also adopted their second child, Richard, in 1977.

In 1984, Ruth joined Prairie View in McPherson as a licensed clinical social worker. She specialized in adoptions and play therapy. After 28 years of service, Ruth retired in 2012.

Ruth was an active member of Lutheran and Methodist churches her entire life. She helped countless individuals and families heal emotional wounds, achieve greater self-esteem, and improve mental health. She loved cooking, sewing, jigsaw puzzles and rooting for the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team.

Ruth is survived by her husband Art; brothers Fred and Ed; stepson John and his wife LeAnn; plus three grandchildren.

Class of 1956 / Cranmer, Dean
« on: June 19, 2021, 10:54:38 AM »
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dean Cranmer, of Cottage Grove on October 25, 2020 at the age of 83 years old.  He was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  After several years battling cancer and diabetes, Dean died peacefully with his beloved wife Mary and family by his side.

Dean was born in Cottage Grove on June 4, 1937, to Fred and Juanita Cranmer. He was the second child of five siblings.  Dean attended Cottage Grove High School, class of 1956; he was most proud of his 1955 football team’s 2013 induction into the Cottage Grove High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  At 18, Dean enlisted with the U.S. Air Force and served until 1958.  On December 1, 1955 he married Mary Thiel.  He worked in the timber industry for Bohemia, Inc.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, and son Roger.  He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 64 years, sons Fred (Ronda) and Tim (Cindy), Roger’s widow Dianna, and five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

He will be missed doing many of the things he enjoyed most with his family and friends: football parties, traveling in his 5th wheel, hunting, fishing, and coffee with his friends.  He also enjoyed watching and attending his sons, grandchildren and currently, great-grandchildren in their various activities and sports.

A service was held to honor Dean on November 2, 2020.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dean’s name to Sixth & Gibbs Church of Christ, 195 North 6th Street, Cottage Grove, OR 97424 or Cascade Hospice, 2650 Suzanne Way Suite 200, Eugene, OR 97408.  Arrangements in the care of Smith Lund Mills Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove, OR.
