Palmdale CA ? Stanley Eugene Harris, 79, passed away peacefully at his residence after a long battle with Parkinsons.  He joins his wife, Carol Lee Harris, who passed away 12 years earlier.
 
He is survived by his two sons, Guy and Dale, and his grandson William Stanley Harris.
 
Stanley was born and raised in Cottage Grove OR, the son of Dale and Dorothy (Wittekind) Harris.  He graduated from Cottage Grove High School Class of 1958 after a distinguishing himself in athletics.  He then attended Shasta College where he met and fell in love with Carol who would become his wife in 1960.  Two years later they would be blessed with the birth of their first son Guy.  Stanley joined the United States Air Force and the family was stationed in Puerto Rico when their second son Dale was born. 
 
During his career in the Air Force, Stanley?s love of animals served him well working in the veterinary clinic and taking care of military working dogs, dependents pets, and civilian pets and animals.  During his tour of duty in Vietnam his office would care for the working dogs as well as treating civilian animals like the Vietnamese water buffaloes.  During a tour of duty in Italy with his family, Stanley started SCUBA diving in the Mediteranian Sea.  He trained to become a SCUBA instructor and would often take his sons on the trips.  Stanley also volunteered his time as a Little League Baseball Coach for his son?s teams.
 
When the family returned to the US, Stanley took advantage of the G.I. Bill and earned his Business Administration Degree.  He retired from the USAF in 1982 and cross-trained to be a radiology technician.  He quickly found work at the hospital in Fortuna California where he worked until 2006 before retiring.  He continued attending classes at Community Colleges wherever he went ? learning was a life-long adventure for him.  In 2013 he was inducted into the Cottage Grove High School Athletics Hall of Fame.
 
Stanley?s ashes will be in attendance at his memorial at the Cottage Grove Community Center, 700 E. Gibbs Avenue, Cottage Grove on August 3, 2019.  Afterwards, Stanley and Carol?s remains will be interred at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.

Kirk M. Horn, 79, passed away on Sunday February 10, 2019, in Billings, Montana, where he was being treated for cancer. He was surrounded by family he loved.

Kirk was born in Eugene, Oregon, and grew up on the family farm where his childhood was one of hard work, love, and lots of outdoor activities. He completed college at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon and Pacific University in Oregon and attended graduate school at the University of Arizona with degrees in biology. He loved large mammals, the outdoors, and believed in taking care of the environment.

Kirk worked summers at Crater Lake National Park where he met his wife Beth and they enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. He taught biology at Heppner High School in Oregon where he thoroughly enjoyed his students and watched them grow into young adults. He then went on to a rewarding career with the U.S. Forest Service where he held positions as forest biologist on the Mt Hood National Forest in Oregon, regional wildlife biologist in Portland, Oregon, national threatened and endangered species coordinator in Washington D.C., and Regional Director of Wildlife and Fisheries in Missoula, Montana. He and Beth retired in 1999, settling in a home on the shores of Hebgen Lake where they could enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities that they loved. Kirk continued working on wildlife issues after retirement and was President of the Board of Directors at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center for many years. He always found it a source of pride and esteem to be able to teach people about the wild animals he so loved.

Kirk is survived by wife Beth, daughter Frances Malcolm (Greg) Charnesky, and grandsons Owen and Matthew. Donations may be made in Kirk?s name to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone.

Roger Dean Cranmer, age 62, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 from kidney failure. He was born in Eugene, Oregon on March 26, 1956, to parents Dean and Mary Cranmer and was the oldest of three children.

Roger was a lifelong Cottage Grove resident and a 1974 Cottage Grove High School graduate.  Loved ones celebrated his life on December 15, 2018 at City Life Church, in Cottage Grove.

Roger worked 14 years at Bohemia Inc., until the company closed down.  This provided the opportunity to enroll in Lane Community College?s first dislocated workers program in 1989, paving the way to an 18-year career in the RV industry. In 1991, he joined Marathon Coach and enjoyed the opportunity to travel around the United States and abroad, meeting many wonderful people along the way.

On July 13, 2009, he received a second birthday, a wonderful gift of a kidney from his mother.  After recovering, Roger and longtime friend Archie Telfer formed Valley Mobile RV Repair in 2013.   Roger was a lifelong outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends.  He was also an avid sports fan who enjoyed spending time with his family watching Oregon football, as well as coaching his children?s youth sports teams.

Roger is survived by his wife, Dianna Cranmer of Cottage Grove, parents, Dean and Mary Cranmer of Cottage Grove, son Todd (Jaime) Cranmer of Creswell, daughters, Melinda Cranmer and Amanda (Jadon) Kuehn, both of Cottage Grove, brothers Fred (Ronda) and Tim (Cindy) Cranmer of Cottage Grove and seven grandchildren.

Barbara (Geer) Funk died July 16, 2018. Her memorial will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1090 Berntzen Rd., in Eugene, OR on August 4. 2018 at 11:00 AM.  Barbara Ellen Geer was born November 4, 1941 at McFarland Maternity Home in Cottage Grove, Oregon, to Roy A. and Marie (Gilham) Geer. Ten days later, they took her home to the new house they had cleared the land for and built themselves, moving in Oct. 4, one month before she arrived.

Another month had barely passed when the country was drawn into WWII. Those years were hard on the grownups, but the little home on the hill overlooking Cottage Grove Lake was filled with much love and everything a little girl needed. All winter the wood stove snored along cozily as she sat in her little rocking chair many an evening listening to her mom play the violin and Dad his guitar. When good weather came, she played with her dog & cat, followed old deer trails, picked wildflowers or played with the sandbox & swing her dad had made her.

She loved learning, at home & then at Latham Grade School. She almost always got to put on coat-hanger wings & a tinsel-wrapped halo to be an angel in the Christmas program at school or at Hebron Grange.

Barbara was still at Latham when she and a girlfriend saw the ?cute blonde boy from London,? though she didn?t see him again until Cottage Grove High School. They danced their way through contests and his Prom, and he asked her to marry him when he returned from Nat. Guard training. She kept busy with school work, the Sr. Class Play, and as ?Lion Tracks? annual editor until he came home from CA. They were married May 2, 1959 at the Methodist Church in Cottage Grove, OR with her mom on her violin and his Grandma Blackmore at the organ, playing ?With This Ring I Thee Wed.?

They moved to Eugene after Paul got a job as a roofer for his friend?s dad. By the time their third daughter was born, they moved from a duplex they were buying into a corner house on Chase Street where they were to live 55 years. A son joined the family there. They started a roofing/construction business, kept up with everything the children did, went camping, fishing & hunting, followed the Oregon Trail, traced family history and took photos of it all. Barbara went to work for Bethel School District, first as a cook, then in the Resource Room for 23 years before retiring.

They joined Asbury Methodist Church. Her ?To-Do? lists seemed to get even longer as they planned vacations, family events with the grandkids & wrote the family newsletter every month. As her folks aged, she & Paul spent more & more time with them.

A loss of energy sent her to the Dr. and the discovery of cancer. She fought it as her Dad passed away and continued treatment as they moved her mom into assisted living. ?Faith, Family & Friends? kept them going, along with Paul?s help. Just after the death of her mom, Barbara passed the mark as a 5-year cancer survivor. The whole family celebrated.  They celebrated again in 2016 for the 75th anniversaries of the day her folks moved into the Home Place, & Barbara?s 75th birthday. Family photos & memories of all the happy times were shared again.

After years of keeping her diabetes under tight control with diet, her blood sugar was suddenly too high. Doctors found she had spots of cancer in her pancreas and liver. She started chemo again in May 2017.

Her Faith, Family and Friends were so important to Barbara. Each generation was welcomed and precious to her and to Paul. She was an only child, but she and Paul made a family circle. It encompassed: Vickie (Earl) Long; Bonnie (Mike) Allen; Sandra Funk; & Greg (Carrie) Funk. Grandchildren included: Joe (Tiffany) Padilla; Linda Charette; Sarah (Chris) Carpenter; Jennie (James) Gardner; Steve Allen; Josh (Emily) Funk; Robert Funk; Sam Funk & Calvin Funk. Great grandchildren: Rio Cournoyer, Xander Charette, Ava & Lillie Gardner. Dear friends included Ken & Doris Adair, many from Asbury, and in-laws: Gary & Alice Funk and David Cooper. 

Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chappel in Cottage Grove was in charge of arrangements. Burial was at TaylorLane Cemetery south of Cottage Grove off London Rd. Donations in her memory would be welcomed at Asbury UMC or the Oregon Cancer Foundation.

Clifford Lee Cook, The Gay Mayor of Central Oregon, passed away on September 21 at his home.

A long time resident of Bend, he was 77 years old. He was a man who always had a positive attitude. He was born in Salem, OR on March 3, 1940 to Vye (Rickard) and Vance Cook. He taught in the Salem School District for 30 years at both South Salem High and Sprague High School. Cliff retired in 1993 to live in Central Oregon. He worked at Sunriver and Red Lion for a number of years in hotel administration. He worked hard and long for equal rights in the LGBT community, serving on the board in both PFLAG and the Human Dignity Coalition.

He founded Stars and Rainbows to provide social events for the LGBT community and their friends and families. He felt very strongly that hate, prejudice and discrimination had no place in this world. He was a much loved brother, nicknamed Butch, to Christy Sanders, Sally Eeds and Richard Schultz. He was Uncle Butch to Kristina Ferrero, Rick Schultz and Tracey Lorts. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, Vye and Vance, step-father, Oscar Schultz and god parents, Ray and Maude Ruggles. A service was held at 4:30 on September 30 at Nativity in Bend Lutheran Church, 60850 Brosterhous Rd.

The general rule is we have the reunion on the first Friday of August, which this year is August 3.  See you there?

Terrance Elmer ?Terry? Nousen of Marysville, WA passed away January 4, 2018 at the age of 77.

Terrance was the son of Claude and Irene (Atwood) Nousen born May 3, 1940 in Susanville, CA.

Terry moved to Cottage Grove as a child and attended school here, graduating from Cottage Grove High School in 1958. After high school he did construction work with his father in Alaska before joining the Navy, where he served as an electronics technician during the Vietnam era. He married Margaret Elizabeth Land in 1965 in Cottage Grove where they lived for several years before settling in Hillsboro, Oregon. Terry worked at Tektronix for many years as a manufacturing manager. After retiring, he and Margie moved to Yoncalla where he built their dream home which they enjoyed for many years before health concerns this year prompted a move to Washington to live with their daughter, Gretchen.

Terrance is survived by his wife Margaret (Land) Nousen, his son Andrew Nousen (Karen), Corvallis, OR, his daughters Gretchen Nousen, Marysville, WA, and Greta Palmer (Derick), Glennallen, AK, his brother Tim Nousen, Sausalito, CA, and his seven grandchildren Libby, Hannah, Liam, Lily, Lucy, Elkie, and Laurel.

In keeping with Terry?s wishes, there will be no service. The family will have a private memorial and scatter his ashes at a later date.

Gary Dean Johnson, 77 of Cottage Grove, Oregon passed away November 24, 2017.

He was born May 6, 1940, in Portland, OR to Clarence and Hattie (Fisher) Johnson. Gary graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1958 and played both baseball and football. He loved to take his grandkids on his truck in the parades. Gary drove a log truck in both CA and OR as well as other trucks. He retired from Willamette Trucking in 2007. Gary enjoyed watching old movies, walking, baseball and football games, feeding birds, watching his grandkids playing sports and giving them great advise. He married Sandra Steen on March 16, 1958, in Cottage Grove, OR.

Gary is survived by daughter Barbara Johnson, Eugene, OR, son Tim (Denise) Johnson, Cottage Grove, OR, daughter Vicki Johnson and son Rod (Laura) Johnson both of Springfield, OR, sisters Joan and Candy both of Cottage Grove, OR, brother John Johnson, Salem, OR, brother Walter Johnson, San Antonio, TX, 7 grandchildren; Chris, Julian, Dani, Oliver, Dylan, Ryder and Bryon, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, a sister and step-dad. There will be a celebration of life after the first of the year. Inurnment at Myrtle Creek, OR. Memorial contributions may be made to the Burkitt Lymphoma Foundation.
