Dick and his wife Sarah live in an over-50 community in Plainfield, IL. While still working as an attorney in Dallas, TX, Dick suffered a serious stroke at the age of 57. He is doing OK now, but has difficulty talking. Dick's mom, Eva, is now 100 years old and still lives in Lake Oswego. While it is very difficult for Thwings to travel, Dick and Sarah did come to Lake Oswego for a visit with Dick's mom last Christmas.

Dick has a son Chris and a grandson Noah, both of whom live in the Lake Oswego, Oregon area.
